Tyranny Review – Enter a Dark Fantasy Realm of Choices and Consequences

Tyranny, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive, is a captivating isometric RPG set in a dark fantasy world. Released in 2016, the game garnered attention for its non-linear narrative, unique plot, and overall high-quality gameplay experience. As the Fatebinder, a subordinate of the sinister ruler Kyros, players are immersed in a world where evil has triumphed, and their choices significantly impact the unfolding events.

Set in a fictional dark fantasy universe, Tyranny follows the aftermath of a large-scale conflict between good and evil, where the forces of darkness emerged victorious. Players take on the role of a Fatebinder, a judge, investigator, and executioner, serving the Overlord Kyros. Tasked with enforcing Kyros’ will in the rebellious region known as the Tiers, the player must wield the power of the Edict, an incredibly potent spell, to bring the rebels to submission.

The gameplay draws inspiration from the isometric RPG genre, resembling Obsidian Entertainment’s previous title, Pillars of Eternity, and the classic games of Black Isle Studios. Players navigate the world of Tyranny, making crucial decisions that shape the game’s outcome and influence NPCs’ attitudes towards the Fatebinder. The non-linearity of the game grants players unparalleled freedom of choice, enabling various ways to approach quests and encounters.

Dialogue interactions play a significant role in the game, with multiple dialogue options that can sway relationships with other characters. The reputation system tracks the protagonist’s standing with individuals, factions, and even items, offering passive bonuses and combat abilities based on reputation levels.

The classless character development system allows players to customize their character’s skills and abilities, creating unique combat styles and tactics. Additionally, players can assemble a squad of companions, each with their distinct personalities and skills, further enhancing gameplay depth and exploration.

The combat system in Tyranny offers classic real-time combat with tactical pause, granting players strategic control over their party’s actions. Players can issue orders, dictate battle formations, and set behaviors for their allies, adding depth to the tactical elements of combat.

Tyranny boasts visually stunning isometric graphics that flawlessly capture the dark and brooding atmosphere of the fantasy world. The detailed character designs, environmental backdrops, and spell effects immerse players in the dark and enthralling narrative.

Tyranny stands as one of the finest examples of classic-style RPGs, delivering a captivating dark fantasy experience with a focus on player choice and consequences. Obsidian Entertainment skillfully crafted a world where morality is blurred, and decisions are far from straightforward. The classless character development, engaging dialogue, and strategic combat make Tyranny an exceptional addition to the isometric RPG genre. Despite a few technical hiccups, Tyranny remains an enticing journey for fans of the genre, offering an unforgettable adventure in a world where evil reigns supreme.
