Although Twin Saga has ceased operations as of April 29, 2021, its impact on the MMORPG genre, especially those with an anime theme, is worth revisiting. Here’s a retrospective review on this 3D fantasy MMORPG that offered an immersive world and a flexible gaming system.

  • Game Publisher: Aeria Games (Originally by X-Legend Entertainment)
  • Release Date: 2017
  • Closed Down: April 29, 2021
  • Platforms: Windows
  • Genre: 3D Fantasy MMORPG, Anime MMORPG

Set in the magical world of Aetherion, Twin Saga revolved around the conflict between two twin goddesses, each representing the dualistic nature of this universe. While one goddess aimed for the annihilation of humanity, the other strived to protect it. Players assumed roles of various knights aligned with the benevolent goddess, embarking on quests to preserve peace. This high-stakes storyline was complemented by colorful anime-styled cel-shaded graphics, carefully orchestrated background music, and authentic Japanese voice-overs.

Character Creation and Classes

The game offered an extensive character creation menu, featuring four initial classes to choose from—Mage, Gunslinger, Swordmaster, and Dragonknight. Character visual customization was also robust, offering options for gender, facial features, skin tone, and hairstyle. The narrative journey allowed players to unlock additional classes, thereby offering a variety of playstyles.

Combat Mechanics and Multi-class System

Once past the tutorial and the introductory missions, players got to experience Twin Saga’s unique multi-class system. This system allowed for seamless class-switching, giving characters the ability to level up multiple classes independently and even adopt skills from one class into another. The gameplay thus became a mix of strategy and adaptability, requiring not only mastery of one class but a general understanding of many.

Terracottages: Your Mobile Base

One of the unique features that set Twin Saga apart was its mobile housing system known as Terracottages. These curious structures, a blend between a house and a turtle, offered players the luxury of a walking, customizable home. Housing wasn’t just for show; it also included crafting stations like alchemy labs, cooking facilities, and greenhouses, adding an additional layer of gameplay.

PvP and In-Game Economy

Twin Saga featured a variety of PvP modes, including duels, team battles in arenas, and even class-specific challenges. This gave players the opportunity to earn Arena Coins, redeemable for special gear. However, the in-game shop also allowed for real-world money transactions, making it a controversial feature among the community.

Although Twin Saga is no longer operational, its influence on the genre remains significant. Its compelling narrative, vibrant art style, and innovative gameplay mechanics offered something for everyone—from casual gamers to MMORPG veterans. The game skillfully combined combat, crafting, and social elements, packaged in an anime-themed world, making it a memorable experience for those who had the chance to play it.
