Kobold Press recently unveiled the Black Flag Reference Document (BFRD), an updated version of the 5th Edition System Reference Document (SRD). Published under the Open Resource Community (ORC) license, the BFRD is aimed at being fully compatible with 5th Edition rules.
Introduced in January 2023, the BFRD offers a comprehensive and no-cost resource for gamers, providing essential tools and guidelines for character creation, adventure crafting, and personal gaming material publication.
Founder of Kobold Press, Wolfgang Baur, expressed his satisfaction with the release, stating, “We are pleased to release the BFRD to the gaming community. It represents our dedication to supporting the ongoing interest in 5th Edition gaming by offering a resource that enriches and broadens player and creator experiences.”
The development of the BFRD was backed by extensive playtesting and community engagement, with significant funding received from Kickstarter, surpassing $1 million.
Furthermore, the BFRD serves as a precursor to the upcoming Tales of the Valiant RPG, an addition to the 5th Edition RPG series. The game is slated for digital release on May 10, 2024, coinciding with the inaugural KoboldCon online convention. This event will feature live streaming and organized play sessions.
At present, the BFRD can be accessed on the Kobold Press website, BFRD.net from RPGBOT, and is available for download on DriveThruRPG. Information regarding the ORC license, enabling free and open utilization of the document, is also included.
