Runes of Magic” (RoM) is a free-to-play MMORPG that was first released in 2009 by Taiwanese developer Runewaker Entertainment. Although it draws many comparisons to Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft” (WoW), primarily due to its aesthetic and gameplay mechanics, RoM does offer its own unique features and twists on the genre.

A standout feature in RoM is the dual-class system, which allows players to combine any two of the available classes, unlocking unique abilities and offering diverse gameplay styles. This system provided a level of customization that set RoM apart from many other MMORPGs.

Crafting is another integral part of the game, and with a plethora of professions to choose from, players can create various items, including gear, potions, and more.

However, the game isn’t without its criticisms. The free-to-play model, while making the game accessible to many, also brought about a significant pay-to-win element. The in-game shop offered items and boosts that provided notable advantages, making it challenging for purely free-to-play players to compete at higher levels.

The lore and story of “Runes of Magic” are rich and expansive, with various quests, zones, and dungeons interweaving to form a cohesive narrative. While the storylines might feel familiar to veterans of the MMORPG genre, RoM’s unique world and characters can be engaging for those who take the time to delve deep.

The player base, like many MMORPGs, has experienced its peaks and troughs. During its prime, the community was active, with guilds, raids, and player-driven events forming a significant part of the game experience. However, like all MMOs, fluctuations in player activity are natural over the years, especially with the emergence of newer titles.

Graphics and Sound

For its time, the graphics in “Runes of Magic” were respectable, bearing a strong resemblance to WoW’s colorful, stylized art direction. Character designs and environments were vibrant and detailed, providing a fantasy setting that was both familiar and fresh. Sound design was competent, with a mix of ambient noises, ability sounds, and an engaging soundtrack that fits the game’s world.

“Runes of Magic” brought a fresh twist to the MMORPG genre with its dual-class system and rich lore. While comparisons to “World of Warcraft” are unavoidable, RoM carved out its own niche in the market. However, its pay-to-win elements might deter some players. For those who can look past these aspects, there’s a deep and rewarding MMO experience awaiting them.
