Legends of Runeterra revolves around one-on-one duels, where each player begins the match with four randomly selected cards from their pre-composed deck. The game innovatively incorporates the mana system, where the number of mana gems each player receives increases with every round to a maximum of ten. Unspent mana at the end of each round gets converted into spell mana, allowing for more strategic gameplay.
The base game mechanics may be familiar to TCG veterans – two players, each with a base (Nexus), health scale, and a deck of cards. Players alternate roles between attacking and defending each round, with an additional mana point awarded for every change. The aim is to destroy the opponent’s Nexus first.
Three card types, Champions, Followers, and Spells, form the crux of the gameplay. Champion cards are the most potent and can level up upon fulfilling certain conditions, Followers are standard cards, while Spells are meant to create game-changing effects. Interestingly, unspent mana is stored in a reserve, which can only be utilized for casting spells. This addition brings another layer of strategic depth to the gameplay.
Each card played can later be used for attacking or defending. If an attacking card is not blocked by an opposing card, it damages the enemy player’s Nexus equal to its power. Likewise, every card has a protection rating and can be destroyed if the received damage is higher or equal to this rating. The ultimate objective remains to reduce your opponent’s health points to zero.
The graphics in Legends of Runeterra are a visual treat. The card art is incredibly detailed, and the unique board designs showcase the varied regions of the game’s lore-rich world. The animations are slick, adding a sense of dynamism to every card played.
Legends of Runeterra masterfully incorporates deep strategic elements, stunning visuals, and compelling lore into a free-to-play trading card game. While it does have a learning curve, the complexity offers a rewarding experience for those who invest the time. With its continued support from Riot Games, Legends of Runeterra is a must-play for any TCG enthusiast.
